Surfrider Celebrates 10th Annual International Surfing Day with Free Event in Ocean Beach

WHEN: Friday, June 20th from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Film starts at sunset, or around 8:30 p.m.)

WHERE: Veterans Plaza in Ocean Beach (on the grassy area between Veterans Plaza and the Santa Monica lifeguard station).

WHAT: Celebrate the Surfrider Foundation’s 10th Annual International Surfing Day! The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter is teaming up with FM949 to host a free family-friendly in Ocean Beach. During the day, the Surfrider Foundation will be set up, along with a local surf school who will be offering free group lessons at 3pm and 4pm (limited spaces available), and local surfboard shapers who will be showcasing some of their boards. In the evening, there will be a free outdoor screening of the classic surf film, The Endless Summer, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the film. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket, towel, or lawn chair and watch the film from the grass. There will also be a raffle, popcorn and beverages available by donation. Throughout the day, Wonderland Pub will be featuring several of Karl Strauss' surf-inspired beers with a portion of the proceeds benefiting our mission to protect our oceans, waves, and beaches here in San Diego County!

VISUALS: Surf-enthusiasts and their families will gather in Ocean Beach to learn how to surf, check out the work of local surfboard shapers, and watch the classic surf movie The Endless Summer. Attendees will also have the chance to meet Surfrider Foundation volunteers, and learn about how to get involved in the organization’s programs aimed at protecting our oceans, waves and beaches. Surfrider staff and key volunteers will be available for interviews.

WHY: Founded in 2005 by Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day started with nearly 16 domestic and one international event, and has grown exponentially to 200-plus events in more than 30 countries. Since its inception, approximately 70 tons of trash has been removed from our beaches.
