Event Overview

Surfrider San Diego’s No Border Sewage Committee (NoBS) is hosting a bi-national surf competition on October 15 at Border Field State park. There will be two competitive surfing events occurring simultaneously on either side of the border – Surfrider Baja will host a contest in Playas de Tijuana and Surfrider San Diego will host a contest at Border Field State Park.

The surf competitions are intended to raise awareness about issues impacting our oceans, waves and beaches in the border region and help inspire local surfers on both sides of the border to protect the quality of our ocean. They will also mark the end of Tijuana River Action Month (TRAM) which is a series of education and stewardship events held during September and October to benefit the Tijuana River Watershed. For an overview of the issues we are facing, please watch our campaign video.

Pollution from the Tijuana river has plagued Playas de Tijuana and Imperial Beach for too long. Surfer Magazine recently published an article on the issue, writing,“the Tijuana River mouth and Imperial Beach are still among the most contaminated coastal zones in the state.” NoBS’s mission is to address and eliminate the sewage, trash, sediment and chemical waste that plagues our ocean, waves and beaches in the border region. We do this by raising awareness through outreach and education, while impacting policy through our advocacy work.
