Westley grew up in the Pacific Northwest and moved down to San Diego after college to study neuroscience. As much as he loves biomedical research, he volunteers with Surfrider because he feels a profound sense of immediacy and fulfillment in protecting our wild places from being ravaged by the likes of oil, sound pollution, and the indelible stain of plastic. He joined the Rise Above Plastics committee in 2015, and continues to help with local policy efforts to reduce styrofoam consumption. When his hands aren’t glued to a keyboard, he can often be found in the wild wearing Chacos and a rangefinder camera.
