TAKE ACTION
ESTABLISH AN OCEANSIDE COMMISSION ON SUSTAINABILITY & CLIMATE ACTION
This Wednesday, February 14, the Oceanside City Council will vote on whether to establish a Sustainability & Climate Action Commission. Similar to other all-volunteer boards, commissions, and committees in Oceanside and other local cities, these bodies serve an important advisory role to the City Council.
Oceanside currently has no advisory board for climate or environmental policy. If established, this Commission’s job would be to work on updating Oceanside’s Climate Action Plan, monitor the plan's progress and implementation, and develop recommendations on policies positively impacting the sustainability of Oceanside.
Surfrider strongly supports establishing such a commission in San Diego County's second largest coastal city, where virtually every policy (or lack thereof) ultimately effects our ocean, waves, and beaches. We appreciate Mayor Sanchez and Councilmember Joyce's efforts to bring this idea forward.
If you agree, please consider sending a quick email in support and/or attending Wednesday's City Council meeting!

Suggested Talking Points
Here are some additional talking points to consider for your comment. Be sure to mention if you live in Oceanside or North County.
Similar commissions in Encinitas, Del Mar, and San Diego have been effective in advancing Climate Action Plan (CAP) implementation and general policies that create positive environmental outcomes.
More must be done to meet the goals set in Oceanside's 2019 CAP, including updates to the CAP itself.
The City should take advantage of the valuable and diverse expertise in the community to make recommendations to the City Staff and Council, as well as provide background research for such recommendations.
The Commission can accelerate the development of community plans, public-private partnerships, and innovative ideas that make Oceanside a safer, greener, and more resilient city.
The Commission can mobilize volunteerism and community service programs like park cleanups, beach cleanups, habitat restoration, tree planting, outdoor markets, cultural fairs, and more.
