The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network.
What We Fight For
Your San Diego County Chapter is part of Surfrider’s irreplaceable national network of grassroots activists. We serve as the first response to local threats to our 70+ miles of coastline. We are the boots on the ground who collaborate on both the local and national level with regional staff and issue experts to carry out our mission through campaign, program and educational initiatives in our local community.
Our programs form the basic structure of our grassroots activist network. Each Surfrider program addresses an ongoing coastal issue related to our 5 priority initiatives (see “What We Fight For” above). Surfrider San Diego maintains 8 programs dedicated to our mission. Each is volunteer-led. Programs are the primary conduit through which Surfrider San Diego activists volunteer their time to protect our ocean, waves, and beaches.
Campaigns define us. They are the most specific, visible metric by which we measure our effectiveness as an organization. Unlike our programs, which are ongoing and address broadly defined issues like plastic pollution or climate change, each campaign has a very specific goal. When we win a campaign, we call it a Coastal Victory. We define this term very specifically (see image). Surfrider started tracking victories in 2006; since then, 661 have been won. Almost 50 of those victories have been won here in San Diego County. In addition to Surfrider’s national campaign page, our chapter’s campaigns and victories can be found by clicking the button below.
