The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network.
What We Fight For
Your San Diego County Chapter is part of Surfrider’s irreplaceable national network of grassroots activists. We serve as the first response to local threats to our 70+ miles of coastline. We are the boots on the ground who collaborate on both the local and national level with regional staff and issue experts to carry out our mission through campaign, program and educational initiatives in our local community.
Our programs form the basic structure of our grassroots activist network. Each Surfrider program addresses an ongoing coastal issue related to our 5 priority initiatives. Surfrider San Diego maintains 8 programs dedicated to our mission. Each is volunteer-led. Programs are the primary conduit through which Surfrider San Diego activists volunteer their time to protect our ocean, waves, and beaches.
Campaigns define us. They are the most specific metric by which we measure our effectiveness as an organization. Each and every campaign has a specific goal with a defined beginning, middle, and end. Surfrider has turned over 700 campaigns into victories since 2006; almost 50 of those victories are in San Diego County.
Our chapter employs two full-time staff members and a contract Policy Coordinator for the border sewage issue. We volunteer Executive Committee is the equivalent of a chapter-level Board of Directors and serves as the governing body of our chapter.
