Ocean (and Garden) Friendly Restaurants in Oceanside

The Plot and Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub, co-founded by husband-and-wife team Davin and Jessica Waite, have long been known for their outstanding food and commitment to sustainability. Both businesses recently renewed their Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) status, which prompted OFR volunteers to stop by for a visit.

While Wrench & Rodent primarily focuses on responsibly sourced fish and building relationships with the people who catch it, The Plot takes a plant-based approach. Both restaurants strive to be zero-waste and serve creative and delicious fare made with locally produced food.

In fact, we were pleased to learn that The Plot has expanded its sustainability efforts beyond its doors with a new nonprofit, The Plot Garden Project, which is “dedicated to supporting healthy and resilient neighborhoods through urban food production, education and innovation.”

The Plot Garden Project builds on the original vegetable gardens on the property, which provide produce for the restaurant. Through the project, the team recently created The Tremont Street Garden, a neighborhood garden along the sidewalk where passersby can harvest fresh vegetables to take home. They describe it as “a community-facing showcase of what’s possible.”

By growing fresh produce that is readily accessible to the community, the garden supports healthy eating while giving people an opportunity to connect with where their food comes from.

Jessica summed up the philosophy behind their work in Surfrider’s 2025 Ocean Friendly Restaurant Spotlight:

“We’re committed to shortening supply chains, sourcing from vendors with responsible practices, and being incredibly intentional about everything from our packaging to our menu. We want to make sustainability accessible, not intimidating.”

The Plot and Wrench & Rodent are great examples of how the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program can extend beyond what happens in the kitchen or during food service. From growing food and sourcing locally to reducing waste, the Waites demonstrate how restaurants can make sustainable choices that inspire not only their customers, but the entire community.

Is your favorite restaurant Ocean Friendly? If not, they don’t have to be growing a garden to participate. Encourage them to sign up and join the movement to help end single-use plastics!
