Together we can reduce plastic straw waste.

Say “no straw” whenever you order a drink (even take-out and drive-thru), and take the NO STRAW PLEDGE!

In response to increased plastic waste on beaches and in oceans, the Surfrider Foundation is launching plastic straw reduction/elimination  campaigns around the world.

Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter's  “Plastic Straws Suck” campaign begins on February 1, 2018, and will officially end on Earth Day, April 22, 2018.  Surfrider’s Rise Above Plastics & Ocean Friendly Restaurants program will continue the policy campaign until either  a “Straws Upon Request” ordinance or a “Plastic Straw Ban” are passed in the City of San Diego. Pledging restaurants will be entered to win a $1000 value Dreamshow Virtual Reality shoot of their restaurant.

WHY “PLASTIC STRAWS SUCK”?

• Straws are single use plastic made from petroleum
• 500 million straws are used every day in the U.S which is enough straws to wrap around the Earth 2.5 times every day.
• Straws are rarely recycled or straw recycling is unavailable
• Straws are one of the most common items found during beach clean-ups
• Many customers do not want a straw, so why waste one

How can restaurants help?

Restaurants can reduce the use of plastic straws by implementing a “Straws Upon Request” policy, switching to paper straws or reusable straws, or going completely “strawless”.

How can customers help?

Customers are encouraged to declare their table as being straw free upon sitting, order drinks without straws, bring their own reusable straws, and support restaurants who take the pledge.
