Surfrider’s California network thanks everyone who submitted comments against the Trump administration’s dangerous offshore drilling plan. Over 308,000 people across the U.S. provided feedback, nearly all in opposition to new oil and gas drilling off California and other regions!
While the national comment period is now closed, the battle is far from over. Alarmingly, the administration has launched a new comment period inviting the public (i.e. oil and gas companies) to tell them what areas off Central and Southern California should be opened for oil and gas drilling!
This is the clearest signal yet of the serious threat facing the California coast!
Surfrider urges California residents to take further action to stop new offshore drilling off our coast. Please visit the federal comment links for
Central California and
Southern California and officially state your opposition to new oil and gas leasing.
Comments can be brief but should state that: “The entire Central & Southern California Planning Areas must be protected from new oil & gas leasing due to conflicts with human uses, ecological areas, and cultural resources.”
You can further personalize your comment by highlighting specific concerns with proposed new offshore drilling off California. Examples of helpful information include:
- Potential use conflicts (recreation, boating, fishing, etc.)
- Areas of special concern (ecological areas, marine protected areas, etc.)
- Socioeconomic concerns (jobs, tourism, quality of life, etc.)
- Environmental & biological resources (habitats, wildlfe, etc.)
- Archaeological and Tribal resources
The comment deadline is February 26, 2026.
Thank you for taking action to protect the California coast from new oil and gas rigs!
