Vista Advances Single-use Plastic Bans

The Vista City Council is once again leading the way in reducing single-use plastics as an inland city in San Diego County!

On August 11, Councilmembers voted 4–1 in favor of the first reading of an ordinance to phase out single-use plastic beverage bottles at city facilities and city-sponsored events. The ordinance may return to the Council with amendments, including an expanded timeline for events and a revised definition of applicable events. If those changes significantly weaken the ordinance, we will advocate for the original language.

The Council also voted to move forward with expanding Vista’s existing foam ban for restaurants to include retail sales of foam foodware and other foam products, such as foam coolers. City staff have been directed to develop a draft ordinance, which will return to the City Council for consideration.

These are big steps toward a cleaner environment and healthier future. We’ll keep fighting for strong policies in Vista and across San Diego County to reduce single-use plastics and protect our ocean, waves, and beaches from plastic pollution.
