Chapter Coordinator Position (Part Time – 30 hours a week)

The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 250,000 supporters, activists and members worldwide. The San Diego County Chapter formed in 1991 and today is one of the largest and most active chapters in the world.

The San Diego County Chapter is seeking a highly motivated person for the position of Chapter Coordinator. We are looking to recruit a self-motivated team member to work in a high volume, deadline dependent environment. The primary focus of this position is to support chapter activists with a focus on volunteer management, marketing, and communications. This position is a part-time, limited term contract for one year.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Office administration including permit applications, answer telephones and general inquiries, maintain supply room
  • Maintain regular communications with Surfrider Foundation members and volunteers via the website, email, social media, events calendar and other channels
  • Manage volunteers, coordinate committees and attend committee meetings
  • Oversee the design, ordering, and management of merchandise and outreach materials
  • Work with the Executive Committee and Treasurer to create and manage an annual budget; work with the Treasurer to provide monthly budget updates to the Executive Committee and quarterly budget updates to global headquarters
  • Event planning; plan and lead the annual Leadership Retreat, Chapter Meetings, International Surfing Day and others
  • Recruit new volunteers, assist with Core Volunteer Orientation, lead volunteer appreciation events (holiday party, etc)
  • Assist with chapter outreach efforts including staffing booths, giving presentations, and conducting media interviews
  • Assist Chapter with fundraising efforts, tabling at fundraisers, run corporate beach cleanups, help recruit and coordinate volunteers for Stone Anniversary Celebration

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Executive Committee to ensure the chapter is in compliance with the by-laws, policies and procedures set by Surfrider Foundation’s global headquarters
  • Support board and committee leader development
  • Assist with marketing key chapter events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four-year college degree
  • Basic knowledge of coastal/marine environmental issues
  • Nonprofit management experience
  • Volunteer management experience helpful
  • Salesforce experience helpful
  • Public speaking skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Flexible schedule; available for weeknight meetings and some weekend events
  • Self motivated
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners
  • Strong social skills
  • Must have own vehicle and a clean driving record

Compensation: Commensurate with experience
