Why We Paddle

Our signature awareness event, the Paddle for Clean Water, is the largest non-competitive surf event in California. Each year, hundreds of participants paddle their surfboards, SUPs, kayaks and other paddle craft around the 1,971 ft. pier – the longest concrete pier in the world –  to raise awareness and funds to protect clean water and healthy beaches in San Diego County. Together, we bring awareness to the community about the threats to clean water and the solutions our chapter is putting in place to address them. The Paddle for Clean Water is a free, family-friendly event. We encourage the entire surf & paddling community to join us in this momentous paddle, and we encourage everyone who loves the beach to come out, support, fundraise, and have fun at this awesome community event. San Diego’s beaches are ours to enjoy, and ours to protect!

Live Bands... on the Beach!

Yes, it’s not every day that you can rock out to live music on the sand at OB Pier! Every year, a local band donates their time to support our mission and provide a soundtrack to the paddle around the pier. This year, we’re adding another set after the paddle and plan to jam out into the afternoon! Bands to be announced!

The Sickest Prize Drawing

Our prize draw is the stuff of legends! While some will win BIG, we make sure “everyone’s a winner” by assembling a massive pool of prizes, gift certificates, surf and paddle items, and merch. Grand prizes last year included a custom “bio-flex” board by OB-based Solid Surf, two Ocean Kayaks, women’s wetsuits by Hakuna Wear, loads of Nixon watches, a Sector 9 skateboard, and more. When it comes to rewarding coastal advocates, we don’t play!

All attendees are entitled to a ticket + can purchase more to raise funds for clean water & healthy beaches!

Local businesses, we can’t do it without you! Donating a product, service or experience to our prize drawing is an easy way to support our fundraising and gain exposure to the Surfrider community! Please CLICK HERE to find out how you can support our prize drawing.

Speakers who represent our community

Each year, we invite speakers who represent the beach-loving community and fight for our cause. Previous speakers include Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, Coronado city councilmember Whitney Benzian, and world champion surfer Shaun Tompson. This year’s speakers to be announced…

Local radio legend, surfer and longtime Surfrider supporter Chris Cantore is our official Paddle emcee!
