In September, after a relatively short campaign, the Solana Beach City Council voted unanimously to update the City’s single-use plastics ordinance, requiring truly compostable foodware and prohibiting so-called “recyclable" plastic containers.
On October 14, Ordinance 541 passed its second reading, finalizing adoption. This is an exciting step in the ongoing effort to reduce single-use plastic pollution throughout San Diego County. By requiring compostable foodware, Solana Beach joins Carlsbad, Coronado, and Del Mar in advancing regional sustainability efforts and setting an example for other municipalities to follow.
Councilmembers expressed their appreciation to the speakers and the many emails in support they received. Councilmember Becker specifically mentioned letters written by sixth graders from Solana Santa Fe School.
In addition to the student letters, Executive Committee Member-at-Large Margo Autran and Janis Jones, Plastic Pollution Program and Solana Beach campaign lead, also spoke in favor.
The next step is supporting implementation through outreach and education. Community members and local businesses will need information about the changes and guidance on how to comply. To that end, Surfrider San Diego’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) team will work with City staff and has already scheduled a blitz event.
Join us on Saturday, October 17, from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Solana Beach City Hall. We’ll begin with introductions and a program overview before breaking into smaller groups to visit restaurants. Please register in advance.
We appreciate the Solana Beach City Council and staff for recognizing the growing concern of plastic pollution and taking meaningful action to address it. We also appreciate YOU!
Surfrider San Diego County thanks you for your ongoing support and commitment. Together, we’re moving our communities—and the world's ocean, waves, and beaches—toward a future with less plastic!
