Encinitas Electrification Ordinance

Encinitas Electrification Ordinance

On September 22, 2021, the Encinitas City Council unanimously approved an all-electric ordinance for new construction.

Encinitas is the first city in San Diego County to require electrification for new building construction. The ordinance will require that the vast majority of new buildings forego any reliance on fossil fuel infrastructure, i.e. natural gas hookups, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the city, the county, and state achieve their climate goals. Currently, natural gas is the third largest contributor of GHG emissions in California.  For more information, you can read the San Diego County Chapter policy statement on electrification and the coalition letter we sent to the City of Encinitas in November 2020.
