If you’d like to participate in or lead a “Surfrider Strike Team” cleanup with up to 25 masked, physically distant volunteers – please fill out this Google Form to sign up for alerts. We are conducting these smaller group cleanups but do not promote them publicly to avoid the risk of 100’s of people showing up and gathering during the pandemic.

Join us for a beach & street sweep cleanup with Pure Project at their Carlsbad Village Taproom, who are sponsoring this community cleanup effort in honor of their Carlsbad location’s one year anniversary!

We will start & finish at the taproom, which is only a few blocks from the beach, and volunteers will be able to hit the beach, focus on the neighborhood, or both.

Backstory: 

In March, the Oceanside City Council rejected a draft plastic reduction ordinance written by city staff that would have prohibited food establishments from using EPS foam foodware by June 2022, and required them to distribute single-use plastic straws, utensils and other food accessories upon request only by July 2023. 

They instead instructed staff to turn the ordinance into a “resolution” that requires zero action, and merely supports statewide action against plastic pollution in theory. 


While we agree with the council that the city’s draft ordinance was far from perfect, we are disappointed that they’ve decided to take zero action locally to reduce the scourge of plastic pollution along their coastline. 

Therefore, we plan to advocate for that the City Council directs staff to draft a simpler #SkipTheStuff ordinance that will require all food establishments to distribute single-use plastic straws, utensils and other food accessories upon request only within a 6-month timeline (rather than by July 2023, which is 2 years out).

We are looking for Oceanside residents, businesses, and organizations who would like to add their voice to ours and demand the City Council take this simple step to reduce unnecessary plastic waste on our streets, beaches and in the ocean.

Join Surfrider Foundation for a beach and street cleanup at Oceanside Pier. 

Meet on the north side of the pier, on the beach. Bags and gloves will be provided, but we encourage you to bring your own reusable supplies if you have them.

Beach Cleanup Information

• Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Surfrider tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
• We will have supplies on hand, but please bring your own as our supplies are limited. By bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, you help us create zero waste at our cleanups. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver (select San Diego Chapter as your chapter/club)
• Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.
• If you have a group of 20 or more people, please contact beachcleanups@surfridersd.org prior to the cleanup.
• As a volunteer, you play an active role in determining the sources of trash on our beaches. During the cleanup, please be prepared to fill out a data card detailing the types of trash that you collected, and make sure to have your trash weighed when you return to the registration table at the end of the cleanup. The San Marcos City Council will consider a single-use plastic (SUP) reduction ordinance. The ordinance, if adopted, will reduce plastic pollution in the following ways: 

• it will require restaurants to give SUP accessories and condiments to customers only upon request. This is commonly referred to as a #SkipTheStuff ordinance. 
• it will prohibit EPS foam takeout food ware citywide, as early as July 1, 2022.

Join Surfrider Foundation for a beach and street cleanup at Ocean Beach Pier. 

Meet at Ocean Beach Veterans’ Plaza, just south of the lifeguard station where Abbot St. meets Newport Ave. If there is another event on the grass, we’ll be on the beach nearby. Just look for the blue Surfrider tent! 

Beach Cleanup Information

• Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Surfrider tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
• We will have supplies on hand, but please bring your own as our supplies are limited. By bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, you help us create zero waste at our cleanups. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver (select San Diego Chapter as your chapter/club)
• Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.
• If you have a group of 20 or more people, please contact beachcleanups@surfridersd.org prior to the cleanup.
• As a volunteer, you play an active role in determining the sources of trash on our beaches. During the cleanup, please be prepared to fill out a data card detailing the types of trash that you collected, and make sure to have your trash weighed when you return to the registration table at the end of the cleanup. Our Clean Border Water Now Committee meetings are on pause for the rest of 2021. We will restart in January 2022 with a public kick-off meeting!! See you then! If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact cbwn@surfridersd.org or tmejia@surfrider.org.

Meet at Bolsa Chica State Beach (at lifeguard tower 17) and let the parking attendant know that you are there for the cleanup for free parking. The address for the parking lot to use for directions is 18771 Pacific Coast Highway.

Come on out to surf, cleanup or just hang out with other chapter leaders. I plan to bring some breakfast burritos and doughnuts in the morning then pizza around noon. I know, not the healthiest options so eat well during the week and enjoy a cheat day on Saturday! The HSB Chapter runs awesome cleanups so it’s a great chance to check out their setup and we will have a special guest speaker from CA State Parks during lunch.

It looks like the weather should be nice so bring some sunscreen and a full water bottle. I will bring some canned water also. I would usually prefer a big jug to refill water bottles but am concerned about everyone touching the spigot with COVID still looming a bit. Same goes for coffee. Plan to BYO for now and I’ll see if I can arrange for a reusable carafe with minimal contact. Here are some other things to consider bringing: sunscreen, chair, surfboard and a towel.

The King Tides are the highest tides of the year – observing the highest tides of today helps us visualize future sea levels and how they will affect our sandy beaches, surf breaks, and developments and infrastructure along the coast. 

High time / height: 8:15 AM / 7.63 ft.

Low time / height: 3:25 PM / -1.76 ft.

King Tides also feature extremely low tides in the afternoon, making for exceptionally wide beaches with exposed reefs at many locations. Don’t miss it! 

We do not have an in-person event planned for Saturday, but would like to encourage all concerned beachgoers to observe and document both the HIGH & LOW King Tides at their San Diego County beaches on either or both days. We encourage you to share photo and video footage with us via email (beachpres@surfridersd.org) or thru social media tagging (IG: @surfridersandiego).

King Tide imagery is one of the most convincing tools we have to show coastal cities, the county, and the general public how sea level rise will affect our beaches and coastline, and that we need smart planning TODAY to avoid worst-case scenarios TOMORROW.

  • Video is preferred as we use your footage for a King Tide video each year. You can see our 2020 video HERE. 
  • Phone footage is OK, but please document with your phone in the horizontal position
  • Please document the exact same vantage point for both your high and low tide

We are hosting 2 separate meetups at 830am in North County: 

1. “The Dip” in Carlsbad
   • Meet at 830am at North Ponto parking lot
   • Kristin and Udo will be gather everyone and give background. We will then walk north to the dip to view flooding and discuss the importance of managed retreat of the 101 here.
2. Oceanside “King Tide Ride” (bring bike for group bike ride) 
   • Meet at 830am at Buccanner Park
   • Jim and JP will be there to gather people and give a little background on the Oceanside issues. They will then bike as a crew the 0.8 miles to Wisconsin Ave and S Pacific St to see the flooding there (aim to bike there around 8:45 or 9am). Halei will also be there to take high/low video footage at the Oceanside locations.

We are holding a small holiday get together THIS SUNDAY (12/12) at New English Brewing (http://newenglishbrewing.com, 11545 Sorrento Valley Rd 92121) at 6 pm.

Welcoming all committee leads + SOs, any super core volunteers, and our executive committee members to all have a beer, have a taco, and share some in person love before the end of the year!

I will try to reserve some of their awesome outdoor space for us, so if you don’t mind replying with whether you plan on attending, that would be fantastic!

Join Surfrider Foundation for a beach and street cleanup at Moonlight State Beach. 

Beach and street cleanup at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Meet next to the restrooms. Bags and gloves will be provided but we encourage you to bring your own reusable supplies if you have them.

Beach Cleanup Information

• Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Surfrider tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
• We will have supplies on hand, but please bring your own as our supplies are limited. By bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, you help us create zero waste at our cleanups. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver (select San Diego Chapter as your chapter/club)
• Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.
• If you have a group of 20 or more people, please contact beachcleanups@surfridersd.org prior to the cleanup.
• As a volunteer, you play an active role in determining the sources of trash on our beaches. During the cleanup, please be prepared to fill out a data card detailing the types of trash that you collected, and make sure to have your trash weighed when you return to the registration table at the end of the cleanup. • Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Surfrider tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
• We will have supplies on hand, but please bring your own as our supplies are limited. By bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, you help us create zero waste at our cleanups. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver (select San Diego Chapter as your chapter/club)

Happy New Year! Obviously many of us are bummed that “virtual” is still the thing to do, because usually we take a fun weekend retreat near the beach to personify our Surfrider “protect & enjoy” M.O.

That being said, it’s time to get down to business y’all! This ZOOM meeting will focus on annual staff updates and a leadership roundtable discussion. Meeting will be recorded for those who can’t attend.

Mitch will present some best practices, protocols, and give some refreshers on how we, the raddest chapter in the known metaverse, use a unique volunteer + staff consensus approach to our decisionmaking. This will be especially helpful for our freshly minted EC members.

SoCal Regional Maestro Bill Hickman will also drop in for some regional and national updates. After ample time for questions and discussion, we’ll wrap it up. I’ve blocked out 2 hours MAX but it’ll likely be shorter to avoid the dreaded ZOOM fatigue.

Join Surfrider Foundation for a beach and street cleanup in Imperial Beach. 

Meet at The Spirit of Imperial Beach Statue in Imperial Beach, we’ll be on the beach nearby. Just look for the blue Surfrider tent! 

Beach Cleanup Information

• Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Surfrider tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
• We will have supplies on hand, but please bring your own as our supplies are limited. By bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, you help us create zero waste at our cleanups. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver (select San Diego Chapter as your chapter/club)
• Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.
• If you have a group of 20 or more people, please contact beachcleanups@surfridersd.org prior to the cleanup.
• As a volunteer, you play an active role in determining the sources of trash on our beaches. During the cleanup, please be prepared to fill out a data card detailing the types of trash that you collected, and make sure to have your trash weighed when you return to the registration table at the end of the cleanup. Preview our data card here. 

Weather Cancellation Policy

About the film:

In California, access to waves and beaches is your legal right.

However, that is not a universal truth.

In Cuba, where people fled in mass from Fidel Castro’s regime, surfing and other water recreation became banned. Today, surfing exists in a murky legal gray area, and in response, a group of passionate Cuban surfers is determined to carve out a place for surfing in Cuba and within the country’s culture of athletic excellence.

This venue is picnic style – bring your own camp chair or blanket for seating.

This film will have Spanish to English subtitles; come ready to read!

Join Surfrider Foundation for a beach and street cleanup at Ocean Beach Pier. 

Meet at Ocean Beach Veterans' Plaza, just south of the lifeguard station where Abbot St. meets Newport Ave. If there is another event on the grass, we'll be on the beach nearby. Just look for the blue Surfrider tent! 

Beach Cleanup Information

• Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Surfrider tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
• We will have supplies on hand, but please bring your own as our supplies are limited. By bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, you help us create zero waste at our cleanups. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver (select San Diego Chapter as your chapter/club)
• Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.
• If you have a group of 20 or more people, please contact beachcleanups@surfridersd.org prior to the cleanup.
• As a volunteer, you play an active role in determining the sources of trash on our beaches. During the cleanup, please be prepared to fill out a data card detailing the types of trash that you collected, and make sure to have your trash weighed when you return to the registration table at the end of the cleanup. Weather Cancellation Policy

Join the Surfrider Foundation, EcoFest, and the City of Encinitas for a beach and street cleanup at Moonlight State Beach!
 

In celebration of Earth month, Surfrider is teaming up with Ecofest and the City of Encinitas to spread some extra earth love, and extend the scope of our cleanup past the boundary of the beach!

Bags and gloves will be provided but we encourage you to bring your own reusable supplies if you have them as we run out quickly!

Join the Blue Water Task Force online for monthly meetings on how to engage community science!

This month’s meeting includes a short virtual meeting and in-person lab training at our chapter office. 

The office is upstairs on the northeast side of the church complex, facing Cleveland Ave (right behind the giant preschool sign).

Parking:  There is designated parking in the alley behind the church, DO NOT park in the main lot off Cleveland. If the front gate is locked, use the back gate – code 8142. Plenty of street parking is available as well, and there is a large lot at the DMV across the street that does not appear to be restricted in the evening.

Join I Love A Clean San Diego and Surfrider at Rhor Park to be a part of the largest Earth Week cleanup in all of San Diego county! The 20th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup Day is on Saturday, April 23, 2022.

• A site captain will have check-in and supplies ready for you at the site. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes, some form of sun protection (sunscreen or a hat) and bring a water bottle or two! The site captain(s) will be providing everything else you will need but you could get your own Zero Waste Cleanup Kit as a gift for your donation of $30 to I Love A Clean San Diego!

• After a short presentation on safety and recycling right you will be sent off to remove litter and debris from the area. The site captain(s) will be in charge of sorting and disposing of the collected litter and after the cleanup you can request community service verification in your Community Hub dashboard.

• You can register as a family, household group, or as an individual. As you register, you have the option to add Group Information so that everyone does not have to register separately. Volunteers of all ages are invited to grab buckets and work gloves and make a difference!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This event requires a signed release-of-liability waiver for all volunteers, and anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a guardian. Please download and print the waiver below, sign, and bring with you to this cleanup. No printer? No problem! We will have waivers at check-in for volunteers. If you are under 18 please have your guardian check-in with us at the cleanup to sign-off on your participation.
