Become A Beach Cleanup Site Captain!

Beach Cleanup Site Captain Position Description

 

Thanks to our amazing volunteer Site Captains, we've maintained monthly cleanups at Oceanside Pier & Moonlight Beach for many years. These cleanups are well-known, well-attended, and much-appreciated by their respective communities. We would like to duplicate their success by offering monthly (or bi-monthly) cleanups in central and south San Diego County. If you have free time on Saturday mornings and would like to play a central role in keeping your beach clean, please read on! 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Transport beach cleanup supplies to/from the cleanup site and Surfrider office
  • Communicate with core volunteers signed up to help with beach cleanups
  • Supervise core volunteers at beach cleanups, assign roles and provide assistance when necessary
  • Ensure waiver forms are signed before volunteers begin cleaning the beach
  • Provide bags, gloves, data cards and pencils to volunteers
  • Give safety orientation and instructions on beach cleanup data collection
  • Sort trash and recycling
  • Compile waivers and volunteer data totals safely & securely
  • Post pictures and stats on Facebook & our blog (optional)
  • Communicate supply needs with Chapter Manager

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs
  • Must have a vehicle large enough to transport a 10x10 tent, tables, chairs and supplies
  • Must lead all beach cleanups scheduled for your assigned region (to be agreed upon in    
  • advance)
  • Must be responsible, outgoing, organized and work well with others
  • Must be willing to address the public at cleanups
  • Must commit to a minimum of one year
