Carlsbad to Ban Bags, Bottles, and flyaway Balloons

On Tuesday, May 10th, the Carlsbad City Council will consider a citywide ban on MORE single use plastics. Urge them to vote yes!


EMAIL YOUR SUPPORT

The ordinance, if passed, will prohibit:

BAGS

  • A ban on the use of single-use plastic bags at all retail stores beginning summer 2023
  • An expansion of the bag ban to all restaurants by summer 2024
  • Produce bags for grocery stores, markets, and farmers’ markets shall be compostable produce bags, recyclable paper bag

BOTTLES

  • No person shall distribute plastic bottled beverages at city-affiliated events, regardless of whether the event is private or public
  • No person shall distribute plastic bottled beverages at city facilities, including use of city facilities through a rental, lease, or other agreement

BALLOONS

  • Ban the intentional release of balloons

The Carlsbad City Council will vote on whether to adopt these ordinances as a group on Tuesday, 5/10.

Please add your voice to ours and urge the City Council to TAKE ACTION to reduce plastic pollution in San Diego County!
Make yourself heard by either:
a.) submitting a public comment via email, or
b.) attending the City Council meeting to speak in support during the public comment period—the meeting begins at 5 pm

Option A: Submit a written comment before 2pm on Tuesday 5/10

Written comments received by the deadline will be provided to the City Council before the meeting. Please address your email to clerk@carlsbadca.gov and write Item 6: REDUCTION OF USE OF SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BOTTLES AND BAGS AND PROHIBIT THE INTENTIONAL
RELEASE OF BALLOONS IN THE CITY OF CARLSBAD
in the subject line.

Option B: Attend the City Council meeting at 5 pm on Tuesday 5/10 and make a public comment

When:
Tuesday 5/10, at 5 pm

How:
• Fill out a speaker request form, located in the foyer.
• Submit the form to the City Clerk before the meeting starts or before the item begins.
• When it’s your turn, the City Clerk will call your name and invite you to the podium.
• Speakers have three minutes, unless the presiding officer changes that time (if there are many speakers, they may shorten speaker times).

Surfrider is strongly in favor of Carlsbad’s Single-Use Plastic Reduction Ordinance, and we need your support to ensure it passes. If you agree that local action is required to address plastic pollution along our coastline and in our ocean, please submit a written comment showing your support before 2:00 pm on Tuesday 5/10, or attend the meeting in person to comment live.
