Help Keep the Power on This Summer

Summer is upon us and you may notice a new Flex Alert energy conservation campaign hitting the airwaves. While conserving electricity is important every summer, it is especially critical this year in Southern California because of the current shutdown of the San Onofre power plant that provides approximately 20 percent of the region's energy.
On hot days, when air conditioners are working hard, I urge you to listen for Flex Alerts.
The California Independent System Operator (ISO,) the main power grid operator for the state, issues a Flex Alert only when it is absolutely necessary.  By cutting back on your electricity usage in the late afternoon, usually between 4 and 6 p.m., we can all play an important role in "keeping the lights on" during periods of tight electricity supplies.
Use these helpful tips during Flex Alerts:
•    Flip the switch to off on all unnecessary lights
•    Postpone using major appliances until after 6 p.m.
•    Turn your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher and turn off the air conditioner when you leave the house
Thanks for doing your part to help avoid power outages this summer. Track power conditions by following Flex Alerts on www.caiso.com or www.flexalert.org
