29th Annual Paddle For Clean Water | Sunday, Oct 3 | OB Pier | 9am-130pm
Our signature annual event, The Paddle For Clean Water, is fast approaching and – as always – it takes a community to ensure this year’s Paddle is the best one yet!
If you are interested in supporting and/or lending a hand, please read on for a summary of areas where volunteer support is needed.
Eyes on the Prize(s)
We hold a pretty epic prize drawing at the Paddle, which serves the dual purpose of fundraising and stoking out the crowd. One of the best, easiest ways to volunteer is to help us procure giveaways large and small for paddlers and attendees.
Examples of previous goodies include gift cards of all types (restaurants, shops, hotels, surf shops, breweries, etc.), surf gear and accessories, surfboards (!), sunglasses, handmade items by local artisans, clothing… sky’s the limit.
We try and keep track of “asks” on a Google sheet, which also includes some good prospects and donors from previous years.
Feel free to use either of our letter templates. Just “make a copy” or download and customize as you see fit!
The Breakfast Club
Each year, we provide breakfast for paddlers in the form of bagels, cream cheese, fruit and coffee. And we do it zero waste style of course, with real mugs and reusables ‘cuz we “stay classy” not trashy.
For bagels, we hit up 4-5 local bagel shops and ask if they can donate their leftover bagels on the Friday or Saturday prior to the event. Should you choose to accept this mission, it goes like this:
- Make the ask at one or more bagel shops
- Coordinate with shop(s) to pick up bagels right before they close on Friday 10/1 or Saturday 10/2
- Report a quantity estimate to our Breakfast Club team Captain
- Bring on Sunday morning or drop off with the Captain so he/she can bring
Peer to Peer Fundraisers
We launch an online fundraiser in conjunction with the Paddle each year via our online platform, Give Lively. It’s easy to make a direct donation and/or launch your own peer-to-peer fundraiser and share with your friends, fam and colleagues via social media and email.
Peer-to-peer pages can be for an individual or a team. A team page is great for local companies, clubs, etc.!
Day-Of Event Crew
Ensuring a smooth operation day-of requires a team of roughly 25 volunteers. Tasks include helping with setup and/or breakdown, selling “prize drawing” tickets, hosting various Surfrider booths (breakfast, tee shirts, information, prize drawing), and a bunch of other random stuff that comes up!
Stay tuned as we’ll be opening signups for day-of volunteering 2-3 weeks prior to the event!
Sponsors, Speakers, Bands
Would you or your company like to sponsor our event, host an activation booth onsite, or provide prizes and/or food and beverage for paddlers and attendees? Awesome!
Are you part of a rad local band who’d like to rock out a set on the beach to stoke out hundreds of paddlers and Surfrider community members? Cool!
Are you – or do you represent – a really inspiring, knowledgeable, locally or globally famous activist or surfer/ocean recreationalist and want to rally the crowd? Nice!
