July Chapter Meeting on the Surfer Health Study

Join us for our next quarterly chapter meeting on Wednesday, July 16th from 6:30-8:30pm at the newly renovated Karl Strauss Brewery Tasting Room, located at 5985 Santa Fe Street. Guests will receive one free taster courtesy of Karl Strauss and pizza from Woodstock’s Pizza. This meeting will be focused on Beach Water Quality and the Surfer Health Study.

The Surfer Health Study is interested in finding ways to more quickly and accurately determine if there is a health risk to surfers due to pathogens in the water. State and local governments have made great strides to improve water quality during the summer months (April – October) when the majority of beachgoers enter the ocean. However, there remains uncertainty about whether ocean exposure during the winter months, when water quality may be worse, poses a public health risk. Ken Schiff leads the Science Team that conducted a Pilot Study at Tourmaline and Ocean Beaches last winter and will describe the first prospective study to measure the health risks associated with surfing on the Southern California coast.

Ken Schiff is the Deputy Director for the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project. SCCWRP, as it is known, is a public agency whose mission is to bring unbiased scientific research to managers and stakeholders throughout the southern California region to improve environmental decision-making and enable effective stewardship of our natural resources.
