Meet Our CEO, Dr. Chad Nelsen

Join us for our next quarterly Chapter Meeting on Wednesday, April 15th from 6:30-8:30pm at the Karl Strauss Tasting Room, located at 5985 Santa Fe Street. At this meeting you will hear from our CEO Dr. Chad Nelsen on The Next Wave: A Vision for Surfrider's Growth and Effectiveness and our Beach Preservation committee on the scope and mission of the committee, previous accomplishments, and their upcoming campaign to increase the public's understanding of seawalls.

Dr. Chad Nelsen is the Chief Executive Officer for the Surfrider Foundation where he leads the world’s largest grassroots network dedicated to ensure healthy a ocean, waves and beaches, through approaches that integrate coastal recreation with conservation. He earned a Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a Master’s of Environmental Management from Duke University’s Nicholas School for the Environment, and Bachelor’s of Science from Brown University.

Tom Cook is Co-Chair of the Beach Preservation committee and has been working with the San Diego County Chapter for the past five years. Prior to that, he was a co founder and Chair of the South Florida (now Miami) Chapter. Tom has a Masters of Science in Physical Oceanography from University of Miami, and currently works at Scripps Institution of Oceanography where he works on radar remote sensing of waves and currents. When conditions permit, Tom conducts in situ wave measurements utilizing foam based wave riding craft.
