Member Spotlight: Sunshine Johnson

Surfrider San Diego is highlighting individuals who stand behind our mission and have significantly contributed to the cause. The Member Spotlight is one of our ways of showing appreciation to our wonderful and dedicated members!

This month, Sunshine Johnson is featured in our Member Spotlight.

How did you first get involved with Surfrider Foundation?

I wanted to be part of a group of likeminded people. Once I found Surfrider, I immediately knew it was a place that aligned with my personal life goals, so I got involved.

How long have you been a member?

Over 10 years!

What do you do as a member of Surfrider SD currently?

I am the Vice Chair for the Executive Committee, the liaison for Events and Fundraising, and a STOP Climate Change and Hold On To Your Butts Committee member. I mentor volunteers and staff, communicate with businesses on behalf of the organization, and I am a Climate Reality Leader at Surfrider. I also participate in beach cleanups and boothing events!

Why is being a Surfrider member important to you?

Volunteering has always been a value of mine; I grew up giving back to community. I think there is a great importance to giving back to planet, and Surfrider allows me to do that.

What excites you most about Surfrider SD’s work?

I love that Surfrider actively focuses on protecting the ocean. Being involved with a large network of environmentalists has also been really exciting. I have loved learning more about the environment and engaging with the public through Surfrider. I get to continue improving my leadership skills as a member. And it’s just a lot of fun to be a part of!

What is your favorite beach spot in San Diego?

I have two favorites. One spot I love is Fiesta Island because I can take my dogs there and watch their joy as they run around. My other favorite is Law Street Beach because it has the best view.

What outdoor activity do you like to do most?

Taking a walk with my dogs on beach.

What is something that people might be surprised to learn about you?

I read braille, I have hosted over 30 international students, and I am a closet artist/crafter.

What is one thing you could not live without?

I could not live without clean, fresh water!
