#MyBag Social Media Campaign
Californians use over 13 billion single-use plastic bags every year. These lightweight bags blow out of trashcans and landfills and end up in our oceans and waterways. They attract toxins, breakdown into smaller pieces and harm whales, fish, turtles and other animals that mistake them for food.
To address this pollution, Governor Jerry Brown last year signed into law a statewide ban on these plastic bags that was supposed to go into effect July 1, 2015. To help ensure more people reusable bags, SB 270 also includes a ten-cent charge on recycled paper bags.
However, plastic bag companies from Texas and South Carolina have spent over 3 million dollars on a signature gathering campaign that is forcing California’s law onto the November 2016 ballot, and delaying the ban until voters cast their votes on a referendum.
But on July 1, 2015 we’re moving forward anyway.
The #MyBag social media campaign invites you to go online and post pictures of yourself, friends and family, with reusable bags you use at the store.
Whether it’s a bag you’ve decorated, a trendy bag you take everywhere, or a trusty reusable bag you got at the grocery store, show the world what bag you’re using to move past the era of disposable plastic bag pollution.
Post your #MyBag ‘selfie’ to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms, and make sure the world knows you’ve had enough of single-use plastic bags polluting the environment. Explain your support for California’s plastic bag ban; encourage your friends, family and followers to do the same and to be sure to include #MyBag and other hashtags that will help spread the word.
This social media campaign officially kicks off Tuesday, June 30, 2015 so be sure to start posting your #MyBag ‘selfies’ with reusable bags on that day!
