Apply to Serve on Our 2022-23 Executive Committee

Do you share our vision of 100% protection of our coastline? We are looking for dedicated members, supporters and/or community stakeholders to run as candidates in the 2022-2023 Executive Committee term.

The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. San Diego Chapter is home to the largest and most active chapter in the world, with over 2,500 members, 3 dedicated staff, 8 committees, hundreds of dedicated volunteers, and over 46 coastal victories.

The Executive Committee is the equivalent of an organization's Board of Directors. Since the Surfrider Foundation has a Board at the national level, we call chapter-level Boards "Executive Committees." The committee is comprised of 7-9 elected volunteers (depending on # of applicants), and has the legal responsibility and authority to oversee the efforts and activities of the San Diego Chapter.

Together, its members establish the Chapter’s preservation and conservation priorities, its internal policies, and develop and implement the budget. Their important work enables our team to carry out the Surfrider Foundation mission. Each member is elected for a term of two years.

The Surfrider Foundation is committed to seeking a diverse pool of candidates and encourages members from any background, race, gender or age to apply.

The San Diego County Chapter Executive Committee is a working board. All members are expected to devote sufficient time and energy to the tasks at hand. All members are expected to:

  • Represent and promote the San Diego County Chapter and its mission, programs, campaigns, and policies to various public audiences.
  • Protect the Surfrider brand.
  • Attend Executive Committee meetings and important related meetings, such as planning retreats, and national
    Chapter trainings.
  • Attend at least two key fundraising events annually, in addition to the Art Gala.
  • Stay informed about committee matters, prepare well for meetings, review and comment on minutes and reports, and regularly check emails.
  • Get to know other committee members and build a working relationship that fuels collaboration.
  • Commit to special projects and/or pop-up projects that suit your skillset as needed.
  • Act as a liaison to a specific committee with the purpose of streamlining communications and providing a support system to the programs.

Applicants interested in serving should be:

  • Able to think strategically and creatively about a range of coastal and environmental issues.
  • Able and willing to commit 2 to 5 hours a week to duties, plus attend monthly meetings.

Applicant Requirements:

  1. Applicant has attended a minimum of 3 chapter events or meetings within the last 12 months.
  2. Applicant must be a current Surfrider member in good standing.
  3. Applicant must be a San Diego County resident.
