April Chapter Meeting Focused on Plastics and Butts

Join us for our next quarterly chapter meeting on Wednesday, April 16th from 6:30-8:30pm at the newly renovated Karl Strauss Brewery Tasting Room, located at 5985 Santa Fe Street. Guests will receive one free taster courtesy of Karl Strauss and pizza from Woodstock's Pizza. This meeting will be focused on our Rise Above Plastics and Hold On To Your Butt programs.

Emelia DeForce is a Research Scientist at MO BIO Laboratories in Carlsbad. She received her master's and PhD from the University of Massachusetts Boston studying both medically important microorganisms as well as microbes that live in soil. Since microorganisms are found everywhere, she has traveled to very remote places to sample, and is thankful for every opportunity to be on the ocean. In "The Plastic Effect: How Plastic Pollution is Changing the Ocean Ecosystem" Emelia will discuss the problem of open ocean plastics while giving an overview of plastic concentrations and how that is affecting the ocean ecosystem touching on results from the Plastics at SEA research expeditions.

Our Hold On To Your Butt committee will be doing a skit on how confront smokers on the beach so that they get the message without feeling patronized. There will also be trivia on cigarette waste with prizes!
