How will lagoon restoration projects impact Cardiff Reef?

Join us at our monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 19th from 7-9pm at Forum Hall in UTC.

We will be discussing the importance of lagoons to the health of our oceans and the impacts of lagoon restoration at two different locations in San Diego.   We will also be talking about the possible impacts to our local surf breaks, including Cardiff Reef, so be sure not to miss this one! Our guest speakers include David Kay, Megan Hamilton, Chris Webb and Tim Stillinger.

David Kay the Manager for Environmental Project for Southern California Edison will be providing an update on the San Dieguito Lagoon Restoration.  The reconstruction was just completed with the dredging of the lagoon mouth in Del Mar.  David will discuss the success of the restoration so far, and the plan for long-term monitoring.

Megan Hamilton is a program manager at the Resource Management Division of the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation.  She has extensive CEQA and permitting experience and will be instrumental in ensuring the County fulfils its role as CEQA lead for the restoration project.  She has a Masters degree in physical oceanography and has been involved in lagoon monitoring and restoration in previous career positions.

Chris Webb is the Senior Coastal Scientist for Moffatt & Nichol.  His degrees are in Geography from San Diego State University.  He works on restoration projects and surfs regularly.  These projects typically interface with the coast so he has conducted several studies of surfing and project effects.  He leads the Surfing Study for San Elijo Lagoon Restoration.

Tim Stillingerholds a B.S. in Molecular Environmental Biology from University of California, Berkeley and is now an Associate Biologist for the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy. During college he worked in research labs at U.C. Berkeley and Scripps Institution of Oceanography and participated in Pacific Ocean research expeditions. Tim grew up and worked as a lifeguard in Encinitas, CA, and has been surfing Cardiff Reef and the surrounding breaks since he was five years old.
