Since election day, we’ve been fielding lots of questions about California’s historic plastic bag ban. Here is some information which aims to answer these questions.
First, CLICK HERE here for a Prop 67 FAQ from Californians Against Waste. It covers the basics, and also includes a template letter for non-compliant stores (also linked below).
A more detailed FAQ can be FOUND HERE on the official CA recycling website. It contains detailed information on what types of bags are permitted, which stores are required to participate, etc.
Lastly, what if your local grocery store, pharmacy, or liquor/convenience store is not complying with the ban? Here are some steps we recommend:
- Approach them directly. There is some confusion about the law. Some retailers may be under the impression there is a phase-in period. Or, they may not know the law applies to their store.
- To report a non-compliant store in another city, the Public Works or Environmental Services departments are a good place to start.
If you cannot reach a local contact, the Office of the Attorney General’s Public Inquiry Unit - (800) 952-5225 - has the ability to enforce the law through the entire state.
Remember, it's up to all of us to ensure this law succeeds!
