David Zetland, Senior Water Economist and author of The End of Abundance: Economic Solutions to Water Scarcity will speak on “Three Easy Steps to Sustainable Water Management in Southern California” next Wednesday, October 5th at 6:30 pm at The San Diego Foundation. The event is free to attend, refreshments will be served, and parking is free.

Water pricing plays a fundamental role in how this precious resource is used or overused. The increasing scarcity of clean water threatens lifestyles, the environment, business and agriculture. This talk will focus on the origins of water scarcity, the impacts of mismanaged water and suggest three easy steps to restoring balance in the water system and in our lives. Zetland will talk at length on the concept of scarcity pricing, and the idea of managing water via water exchanges. The forum is intended to illuminate the issue of San Diego’s water pricing, and create a dialogue between the public and decision-makers.
Zetland is currently employed by the Department of Environmental Economics and Natural Resources at Wageningen University in the Netherlands where he is working on an EU-funded project, "Evaluating Economic Policy Instruments for Sustainable Water Management in Europe." Zetland received his PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Davis in 2008. Until 2010 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy at UC Berkeley.
