On April 27, 2025, the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter collaborated with Native Like Water to host a powerful coastal access event that brought community, culture, and history back to La Jolla Shores in a way that hasn’t been seen in over a century. Titled “Riding Waves, Honoring Roots,” the event was an Earth Month ocean celebration.
This event went far beyond just getting people to the beach—it was about reclaiming a place in coastal spaces, creating traditions, and celebrating the ocean as a shared resource for all. More than 50 participants—youth, families, and community members—came together to experience the ocean through this special invite opportunity, many for the first time.
Participants were a mix of individuals from various organizations and clubs, including Latino Outdoors San Diego, Black Like Water, All Tribes Charter School, Surf Societe, Surfrider Student Clubs, and more. We aimed to invite people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the ocean through fun and traditional ocean activities.

What made the day especially historic was the return of canoe surfing to La Jolla Shores—something that hasn’t happened at this scale since the early 1900s. Surfboards, SUPsquatch and the Surfing Canoe are rarely out at one beach and even more rarely seen in San Diego.
Native Like Water brought deep knowledge, traditional canoes, paddle gear, and cultural teachings that helped guide the experience. The energy was amazing—welcoming, joyful, and rooted in respect for the ocean and each other. You could hear the screams of joy and see the smiles from the parking lot!
This was coastal access in its fullest form—not just reaching the sand, but connecting spiritually, culturally, and historically with the water. For many, it was a rare opportunity to engage in ocean recreation with cultural relevance, surrounded by support and understanding.
Surfrider San Diego is proud to have helped make this moment possible, in partnership with Native Like Water and Bold As Love Outrigger Surf Canoe. Together, we opened up space for healing, learning, and community. It’s a reminder that ocean justice is not only about access—it’s about Belonging.
We’re excited for what’s ahead and committed to continuing this work. When we say the beach is for everyone, we mean everyone—past, present, and future. Stay tuned for more on future events and community building initiatives.
