Join us for our next quarterly chapter meeting on Wednesday, October 15th from 6:30-8:30pm at the Karl Strauss Tasting Room, located at 5985 Santa Fe Street. Guests will receive one free taster courtesy of Karl Strauss and pizza from Woodstock’s Pizza. This meeting will be focused on our Know Your H2O program and we will have two guest speakers joining us: Hall Razek, Director of the Public Utilities Department for the City of San Diego, and Kevin M. Hardy, General Manager of the Encina Wastewater Authority.
Halla will be presenting on Pure Water San Diego, the City's phased multi-year program to provide a safe, secure, and sustainable local drinking water supply for San Diego. Recycled water will be turned into drinkable water through the use of water purification technology. The program will make San Diego more water independent and is an effective solution for increasing ocean environment protection and securing a modified permit renewal for the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant. Kevin will speak about how the Encina Wastewater Authority is using solids to make fertilizer and generating 70% of their own electricity -- both of these are improvements that other wastewater treatment plants in our area could use to reduce their environmental impact.
Halla Razek is Director of the Public Utilities Department for the City of San Diego. She is responsible for both the daily operation of the city's water and wastewater systems that provide services for more than 1.3 million customers, as well as planning for future reliability of these services. Under her leadership, the Public Utilities Department is developing a unique water reuse program that will help increase water supply reliability for the future of San Diego while also ensuring environmental protection for the ocean. Prior to her present position, Halla worked 18 years as Chief Deputy Director for the City of San Diego's Engineering and Capital Projects Department, then left the City to work for eight years as the Colorado River Program Director for the San Diego County Water Authority before retuning to in City of San Diego earlier this year. She holds a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Dayton, Ohio, and a master's degree in engineering from San Diego State University.
