On December 3rd, 2018, the Del Mar City Council passed a ban on expanded polystyrene foam for restaurants in the City of Del Mar!

The ordinance includes a ban on dispensing prepared food to customers in disposable food service ware made from expanded polystyrene (EPS). The ordinance takes effect on June 3rd, 2019. The ordinance also includes a ban on EPS foam foodware at city facilities, city-managed concessions, city-sponsored events and city-permitted events along with a ban on EPS foam packing peanuts at retailers.
Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter volunteers advocated for this coastal victory by raising awareness about the issue and speaking at city council meetings. Surfrider San Diego is also helping with implementation of the ordinace though educational outreach from the chapter’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants program to City of Del Mar staff and local restaurants.
