Get Inspired, Get Outside!
Winter disappeared in a blink of an eyelid, or did it ever really arrive here in sunny San Diego? :-) But now is the time for ocean friendly garden inspiration, as we move to longer daylight hours with the sun marching progressively northwards across the horizon.
Garden Native Tour March 28 and 29, 2015
If you want to learn more about native plants and view gorgeous residential gardens featuring blooming and thriving natives, the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) is hosting a garden tour March 28 and 29! http://gardennative.org/index.html
Visit area gardens in a community near you (Old Town, Balboa Park, North Park, Clairemont, University City, Tierrasanta, Carmel Valley, Rancho Penasquitos, Poway and Scripps Ranch) and learn and get ideas for turf replacement, native plants you like and are suitable for your own garden, edible gardens, water harvesting and more!
Sunset Cliffs Garden Installation April 11 and 12, 2015
The CNPS will be installing an ocean friendly native garden at the very northern end of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (1350 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, across from the intersection of Adair Street and Sunset Cliffs Blvd). Hundreds of people walk, run, bike, drive by this site every day and the goal is to showcase how an ecologically sensitive garden can also be beautiful.

Saturday, April 11th, 9am - 4pm: The hard work will be done – breaking up the compacted soil and adding mulch and topsoil to the beds. Drop by anytime during this period and help out! Please bring gloves and boots. Hats, sunscreen and water will also be essential.
Sunday, April 12th, 10:30am-11am: Come and listen to garden designer Clay Tschudy talk about the Sunset Cliffs garden design. 11am-3pm: Planting the garden and watering.
Curb Cuts
A curb cut is a strategically placed cut in an existing curb that allows rainwater to flow from streets and parking lots to a native garden with a pollutant filtering basin, rather than go directly to storm drains and the ocean. The OFG San Diego installed native garden that replaced 2,000 square feet of water guzzling turf and is watered by captured runoff from a curb cut is featured in Paul Herzog's informational blog below.
