Will sand replenishment destroy our beaches?

The Seaside Courier recently published a commentary by two of the Beach Preservation's Committee Members (excerpted below):

"The Solana Beach and Encinitas coastline is renowned for its surf and beauty. These valued resources have attracted millions of beach visitors. Similarly, these resources have tempted man to build closer and closer to the edge of the continent....

"Since 1999, Encinitas and Solana Beach have pursued a federal project led by the Army Corps of Engineers to place substantially more sand on the beach. The amount proposed by the Army Corps, though, was even greater than what would naturally occur via rivers and eroding cliffs. In fact, the amount was so great that reefs in the area would be buried and surf breaks would forever be altered...

"Allowing erosion is what made our reefs and beautiful cliffs. We as a community must start valuing public access and recreation above the protection of precariously positioned private property. We must demand more appropriate uses of public funding to protect public beaches...
