Surfrider Celebrates International Surfing Day with ‘Paddle-In’ Movie Night on June 20th

SAN DIEGO – Surfing in Southern California is more than just a pastime; it’s a culture -- and one worth celebrating. Just in time for summer, Thursday, June 20th marks International Surfing Day, and Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter invites you to grab a board and join them for a ‘paddle-in’ movie at the historic Lafayette Hotel, located at 2223 El Cajon Boulevard, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Guests are welcome to hop in the pool or watch from the deck as the classic surf film, Gidget (1959), screens right after sunset, around 8:30 p.m. Before the show, DJ Matty Mac will be spinning beach and surf music of the era. Suggested donation is $5 at the door and includes appetizers and popcorn. Drinks and additional food will be available for purchase. This is an all-ages event.

“International Surfing Day is about celebrating the sport of surfing and giving back to the oceans, waves and beaches that provide us with so much. We’ve been working with the Lafayette Hotel for several months now, and ran an online vote for the film. Gidget was chosen, which is perfect as it fits with the historic nature of the hotel,“ says Chapter Coordinator, Haley Haggerstone.

Surfer and Lafayette Hotel owner, Jay Wentz says, “Surfrider’s mission is incredibly important here in San Diego, and we look forward to helping them engage more people. We are constantly seeking out opportunities to work with local nonprofit organizations, in an effort to showcase our newly renovated hotel and help support their work.”

Founded in 2005 by the Surfrider Foundation and SURFING Magazine, International Surfing Day reaches out to surf enthusiasts across the globe -- uniting them in efforts to protect our oceans, waves and beaches. The annual event started with only a handful of local observances in the U.S. and today is commemorated with more than 200 events in 30 countries worldwide. In addition to catching waves on International Surfing Day, participants are also encouraged to give back to our oceans, waves and beaches. Ocean-lovers at the Lafayette Hotel movie night will have the chance to become Surfrider members and discover the many variety of ways they can volunteer to protect San Diego’s precious coastline.
