Back by popular demand and with more options than ever! Thanks to the our awesome volunteer network, we're offering several opportunities to gather for a beach walk during the annual King Tides on both November 16 and 17.
These in-person gatherings will be occurring alongside our annual King Tides: Observe & Document effort, which leaves time and location up to you. The linked blog post also provides background info on the King Tides and why they're important, in case you're curious.
Choose from one of three morning high tide beach walks and two afternoon low tide walks. Each walk will be led by a knowledgable Surfrider volunteer who will share insights into sea level rise and how it will affect our coastline, especially the beaches we love. They'll be able to answer your questions, and of course, provide information on our chapter's beach preservation work and how you can get more involved.
I'm biased, but my recommendation is to check out as much of the King Tides as you can! After all, they're the most dynamic beach days of the year.
Important: advance registration through the provided links is required to attend any of these events. You'll find all the specific event details at the event registration links. If you have additional questions, you can email us at beachpres@sandiego.surfrider.org
Saturday, November 16
- King Tide Beach Walk: Solana Beach (8am-9am, at HIGH tide)
- Meetup will be near Fletcher Cove. Attendees will check out views of the beach from atop the bluff, on the beach access ramp, etc. This meetup is unlikely to have too much walking, maybe 0.5 miles at most.
- Please RSVP HERE
- King Tide Beach Walk: South Cardiff (8am-9am, at HIGH tide)
- Meetup will be near South Cardiff State Beach, aka Seaside Reef. Attendees will check out the beach, the parking lot which is prone to flooding, and the nearby Cardiff dunes project.
- Please RSVP HERE
- King Tide Beach Walk: North Ponto (8am-9am, at HIGH tide. Again at 3:15pm-4:15pm, at LOW tide))
- Morning meetup will be near the North Ponto parking lot. Attendees will check out the beach, walk along the roadway towards Las Encinas Creek, and learn about a managed retreat project to relocate the road landward in order to preserve this endangered beach.
- Afternoon meetup will follow a similar trajectory, but will also include walking on the beach itself during the negative low tide. If you sign up for both, you'll be able to see this beach at both extremes! Pro-tip: stay for sunset and walk down to Terramar, where the exposed reef allows for great tidepooling.
- Please RSVP HERE for one or both events (click the "viewing time slot" to see the afternoon option)
- King Tide Beach Walk: Del Mar (2:30pm-4:30pm, at LOW tide)
- Meetup will be near Powerhouse Park. While walking along Del Mar's wide, low tide beach will be lovely, this meetup will be less focused on the tides and more focused on SANDAG's efforts to relocate the LOSSAN railroad off of Del Mar's eroding bluffs. Attendees will learn about this long-term regional effort and why it's necessary, while also seeing firsthand how the latest round of construction to stabilize the railroad atop the bluffs hurts our beaches and limits public access to them.
- Please RSVP HERE
Sunday, November 17
- King Tide Beach Walk & Tidepooling: La Jolla (3:15pm-4:45pm at LOW tide)
- Meetup will be near the boat launch at the end of Avenida de la Playa. Attendees will learn about the following in addition to the King Tides:
- the public trust doctrine which guarantees Californians the right to coastal access
- Marine Protected Areas and how they preserve marine wildlife
- tidepooling etiquette
- a stolen historic coastal access at Princess St. that we're working to reopen to the public
- Please RSVP HERE
