Making Waves in La Mesa!

La Mesa may be situated in East County but that didn’t stop the Rise Above Plastics (RAP) team from making big waves in town last month.

On February 13th, the City Council voted unanimously to explore options for reducing single-use plastics. The letters in support sent by Surfrider San Diego friends and volunteers made a difference once again. Thank you!

Councilmembers Dillard and Shu, who brought the item forward, will be heading an ad hoc committee that will lead the effort. Together with La Mesa staff, they will engage the community, gather input, and draft an ordinance aimed at addressing single-use plastics. The ordinance, which probably won’t return to the City Council for at least 3 - 6 months, may include phasing out problematic single-use plastic foodware and polystyrene foam (StyrofaomTM), expanding the California bag law to retail and restaurants, and banning the release of helium-filled balloons.

As the subcommittee work gets underway, Surfrider San Diego's support and involvement will continue. The OFR team is hosting an Ocean Friendly Restaurants social and restaurant blitz in La Mesa on March 24th. We will also be tabling at La Mesa's Earth Day Fair on April 20th. Be on the lookout for volunteer information, coming soon.

In case you missed it, RAP’s effort in La Mesa was in the news!
